1921 Morgan die crack? Pictures now available. I have a 1921 Morgan dollar that I found in my collection. There is what appears to be a die clash running through the tips of "States" and another one beginning above and left of the left eagle's wingtip and running directly over that before ending at the c in America. This is on the reverse. On the obverse is what appears to be the same thing, though through a few stars before ending at the P in Pluribus. I will upload pictures later, but I was wanting to see if anyone had opinions.
Because of the huge number of coins produced in 1921 die cracks are very common. VamWorld has a whole page just for die crack identification: http://www.vamworld.com/21-P+Die+Crack+Break+Guide
Die cracks are very common on Morgan dollars, and it's pointless asking for opinions without photos. No offense intended! I'll wait to see photos. Chris
No offense taken. I'll post both the original photo and the tracing of the die cracks when I get them uploaded.
Die cracks are common errors on coins, and even on Morgan Dollars, they do not carry much of a premium, of any. keep up the hunt!
Thanks for posting the photos! Die cracks are very common on Morgan dollars because they were struck just once in the press with 130-150 tons of pressure. A crack would have to have substantial metal displacement or be fairly severe to warrant a VAM assignment in and of itself. A good example of one would be the 1888-O "Scarface". The letter "M" that you circled is the designer's initial....George T. Morgan. Chris
