So this was about the brightest, shiny coin from the pre-1950's I ran into so far.. It's a 1920-D Wheat Cent, and it looks as shiny as a new 2006-2007.. I'm using a scanner so it may not come though all the good.. It's a rather large image, so rather than time up cointalk bandwidth and space I have it direct linked here. (.JPG, 880K, 1024x7xx) I've posted a few more coins from the search on the blog in the signature.
Nice find, it looks about VF-cleaned, not bad for circulation. Strange, someone cleaned it recently, it is a wheat cent, then they spent it again?
I don't think it's been cleaned in about 5 years. Of course I am guessing, Gramps passed 5 years ago and stopped collecting when his health turned bad 5 or years before that. I wouldn't think he would have cleaned it. I know I didn't clean it.. Heck I don't even take a soft cotton towel/cloth to them for fear of *CLEANING* This coin came from one of the ammocans, it was in a plastic bag the size of a ziplock freezer bag now days. If you check out that link in my sig, you'll see some others from bag I posted.. Once you see those, it should be evident *Clean* isn't in the vocabulary.. lol.. Disclaimer: But again clean to me is bright and shiny and none of these except this one as been that way.. But ya'll the experts so I assume there is a look or tell that indicates the coin was previously cleaned. I appreciate the feedback.. Edit: I updated my list of early coins from that wheat coin mound I sorted last night. I pretty much logged everything 1909-1940. I still have to get though 19x3-19x9 for the rest of the list.. But I think I did ok in the low years. List Here
Patrick - There was a time when cleaning the coins in one's collection was the thing to do - just about everybody did it. So it is not at all unusual to find older coins that have been cleaned - quite the contrary, it is unusual to fine older coins that have not been cleaned.
^ yup, I have a few wheat cents that have been cleaned/polished - tones them nicely, lol. in fact, all my 1916's are cleaned and toned because of it.
