I'm not sure if this is an error or a worn down die - - - or if this is even one of those 2 Feather Buffalo nickels or not. This buffalo is pretty banged up but it looks like the innermost feather is missing on this. Did it wear off or was it ever there? What do you guys think? Is this worth more than the 75 cents I paid for it? http://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af281/ekdahlj/2fbuff.jpg http://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af281/ekdahlj/2fbuff2.jpg
Hope this helps I've owned several of the 3 1/2 legged buffalo nickels over the years, and a couple of the 2 feather coins. What I've read about them is that sometimes the dies come in contact with each other without a coin between them- When this happens usually the dies imprint on each other resulting in die clashes. The coins and dies are inspected every so often for defects or problems, and if any substantial dieclashes, diebreaks, or cuds, etc. are found - mint employees either remove the die or dies to polish off imperfections, or replace the dies with new ones. The feather on your coin was most likely polished off the obverse die - due to a mint employee trying to remove die clashes. This is also how the famous 1937 D 3 legger came to be.:smile
