Opinions on this 1919 Half Dollar. Looks better than the picture and looks nicely toned. Not sure what that blue stuff is. Would a dip in acetone do this coin any good? http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/131/img3258rq2.jpg http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/3025/img3257td2.jpg
Not enough copper in the alloy, so the green lines are probably PVC, not verdegris. If so, a proper series of baths in acetone & distilled/deionized water should clear it right up. They look to me like the results of too long a stay in a soft flip.
Thanks. I will give that a try tomorrow if I get time and try to take an after picture. Some nice detail on the coin so I am really happy with the purchase.
Thanks Frank- What's even better is I got the coin for melt and I think it should go at XF or so on the grade. I am working on getting the acetone and distilled water today. I will soak it for about a minute in pure acetone then rinse it with the distilled water then let it air dry on a cloth. If it still it has the PVC repeat the process. Is that correct?
flyers: Wow!!! Melt!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, that is a great price. Also, yes, perform the process until the gunk is gone. Good luck.
Yeah. Bought it in a lot on Ebay. Got about a full roll of assorted date Walkers for $4.75 a coin. Was really happy when I saw that coin. That coin should pay for the whole lot! I will post pictures after I try to degunk this coin. Wish me luck!
Thanks! I forgot to ask you. After you went to the coin show last month were you able to get az 2006 w silver american eagle at a good price? Thanks.
I'll be curious to see the coin after it gets an acetone rinse, because I honestly thought that it could be AU. Great deal for melt!
Thanks. Coin actually looks better in hand than the picture. I do think it is an easy XF maybe up to AU50. I should get the coin done today so hopefully so pictures later.
No I didnt unfortunately. Out of the 20 or 21 dealers set up there, nobody had one. Thats as big as our coin club show gets, I bought myself a 1938-d Walker instead. I'll check in September when I go to the Hagerstown, MD show, they have about 50 dealers there.
Well I was out getting the acetone. I needed some coin supplies so I brought the half dollar with me to a coin shop. I was offered $600 for the coin. Guess this coin is an easy AU. The guy in the coin shop also worked on the Obverse a little bit. Didn't touch the reverse. Here is the picture http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/5946/img3263vh5.jpg Thoughts on doing this. I am thinking of having it professionally conserved by NCS and try to cross it over to get graded by NGC. If this is a high AU coin I really don't want to mess it with myself. It would probably have a better chance if NCS did the conservation to get it graded by NGC. If it doesn't grade by NGC it will cost me about 30 bucks or so to conserve.
What did he do???????????/ I'm not sure whether he left a tiny spot near her left hand, or got it all, but he sure did a nice job!
Looks like a little spot left. Not sure what exactly he did. He went in the back while I waited in the front of the store. I forget the name of the stuff he used on it. Looking at the coin I think the 600 he offered was a bit low.
I think NCS may be a very good idea. You could send it in there and then try to get it in an NGC slab. That would probably bring you the most money for it.
Thanks Bob- Takes about 4-6 weeks to go through this process so I think I will send the coin out tonight to get the ball rolling. The coin store guy didn't think the coin was cleaned so I think with this conservation it should grade by NGC. Who knows. May even go MS with any luck! Added note: turned down the $600 offer from the coin store.
There are still traces by the bottom of the skirt line but the rest appears to be gone. As to what he did - he dipped it.
