I need you opinion. I have had a 1918 s mercury dime for many years. It has a piece missing. I have searched the obverse and reverse for scratches or marks of tampering and could not find any. Did this coin leave the mint this way. If so .. what is it worth? thanks for you help.
Very interesting. It looks like there may have been a defect in the planchet that caused it to split off after the strike. It doesn't look like damage or tampering to me.
Hmm. it looks like post strike damage (from the limited detail on the pics). The silver looks very much like silver that has been dropped in liqud nitrogen and then struck shattering it, like science teachers in schools (Mine at least) used to do before litigation and liability were a big concern. That's just a guess as the pics realy need more detail.
I was just gonna say that. It looks like it was frozzen then wacked. But then Im always willling to admit im wrong. can you get a scan of it?
1918 s mercury dime scans I hope these scans provide better detail. I understand the liquid niitrogen theory but do not see any distress any where else on the coin.
I guess my next question is how long have you personaly had this one. Beucase the con shows wears. as it if was used for a few years and stoped. So that 25% part thats missing was missing after it was in curc, Its strange to think that people wound have spent it for years and paid no attention to the fact its busted. I have to say that what ever happend to this coin, Happen well after it was put into use. But this case is not closed, How long have you had it and who had it before you if you know. See They did ot have nitro at the local 5 and dime bakc in i918 to say ever. lol Please tell more about this coin. after lookig at the scans i should add. Im thinking this could very well be from a broke die & bad metal mix.
I have had the coin for over 20 years. It was kept in a box of what I considered interesting coins that I am just starting to investigate. For a wile in the middle 60s I worked as a bank teller and acquired some of the coins there. As to the 1918 dime I'm not exactly sure exactly how or when I acquired it.
