I enhanced the pics and I still can't see a clear date, sorry. I too see the die crack and a clear mint mark. Good luck.
Someone here recommends using either "Nic A Date" or half and half of Peroxide and Vinegar. I forgot his name though. Give it a try. What the heck! Maybe its a winner.
If I look at it long enough it does look like an 8 over 7. But then again, I once stared at a cheese sandwich and saw Jesus. I wouldn't use any chemicals to enhance the date. If I owned it I probably would send it to a TPG. If it turned out to be an 8 over 7 then it would definitely be worth the cost.
Not on this one, please. There may be enough detail left to attribute it without turning it into a damaged coin. If it is the overdate, and if the markers are currently visible, "restoring" it would be a very expensive mistake.
+1 but if you compare the real deal and the op specimen..its not the over date. Just pick several areas of each and look the neck, the clash under the jaw, the nose...1 crack isnt the major pup. The date is.
I know I can't tell the pickups for this variety. All I remember is that the non-overdate 1918 also has a really funky-looking 8. (Same deal on the 1918/7-S SLQ, at least for me.)
This was in a live/online auction earlier today. I was 100% sure it is the overdate. The $450 winning bid by an onsite bidder confirmed it. It wasn't attributed. To me, the offset in the openings of the eight are a dead giveaway on worn specimens. You can draw a straight line from top to bottom and they are on either side of the line. I also check the MM location which should be centered between the E and C.
Die crack is there. There was one mintmark position for 1918/7-D, and this one looks like a match. The top loop of the 8 looks like it's left of the bottom loop. I think this is a winner.
If you won, Send it to ICG to get a real professional opinion at a much reduced price from ICG. I don't see it as being the 8/7 due to the curvature of the top-left of the loop. IMO, Jim
Sorry but Im still in the NO group.... and would never take a $400+ shot in the dark on a long shot maybe...
