Melt value on alloyed copper is 25% spot, 1 penny = 1/2 cent melt. As a 1917 penny, it might be worth 5 cents.
Once you see one, they are fairly easy to tell. The date: the top of the '9' and the horizontal bar of the 7 is almost twice the thickness of a regular 1917. There is significantly more doubling on much of the lettering .
