My grandfather gave me this coin some years back and I have no idea what it's worth or the condition it is in (from a coin collector's perspective). Any thoughts? Thanks.

It is a 1916 gold $10 gold indian.

depending on condition it can range from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

Yours appears to be in MS condition. it contain .900 pure gold and has a gold content of around .5 troy ounces.

so if you want the bare minimum that it is worth then take the price of gold divide it in half and that is what you get.

I do not suggest doing that since you have a collectors coin worth way more than melt value. it was minted in san fransico.

at MS 60 it is worth 1,130
    at an MS 63 3,190.

    this is according to nusimedia

you have a very nice coin i am just not sure of the grade.

Thanks for the feedback. I figured it was at least worth its weight in gold (pun intended), but it's been a long time since I've tried to grade a coin and I don't know much about gold coins.

I realize the picture isn't great. I guess I'll take it to a local coin shop and see what they think of its condition since it may actually be worth a trip now!
