A number of years, ago, I dug up this nice 1916D Mercury dime in a local park. I didn't know any better and shined it up with Simichrome polish. Also, as the pic shows, I nicked it a couple of times while digging it out. What would it be worth in this condition?
It looks real----way to go on that point! I would say it would be worth a few hundred---no telling how much till you find a buyer---since its been cleaned and has some rim nicks then I would say under $600. I was set up at a coin show earlier this year and a guy bought in a whole set of dimes with the 1916-D---he didn't know anything about coins and thought that they might be worth what he paid---around $20--I and another dealer checked it over and it was real---we both suggested that he send it off to a grading company--we both wanted the coin because it would have graded VF/F--and we both offered but he was dead set on keeping it---after we knew he wasn't selling it was almost like an auction--I would offer one price and the other dealer would offer another---most of the time a dealer would get mad if someone was up bidding him like that but we have been dealing with each other long enough to know that each other wouldn't get mad and we both knew that he wasn't selling. That is about the only time I've had a 1916-D in that good shape in my hand---not many of them where you can really see the detail as good as this one-- Speedy
It's not worth anything in that condition. My suggestion is that you send it to me so I can dispose of it in an environmentally responsible manner, namely to fill that last d*** hole in my album.
After looking at Heritage I think I grade this coin VF Detail NET VG...cleaned and rim cuts...so it might get as high as $800---give or take---A VF Detail coin that was cleaned went for alittle over $900 IIRC but with these rim nicks or cuts I think that would lower it some more---still a great find for digging in a park!!! Speedy
Mik, I noticed that your '21 Merc. looks about as good as mine looks at the moment, i.e. hovering around Good. Luckily, my '31 D is in much better shape, which draws attention away from the other (these are the only Merc. dimes in my 20th century type set).
Hi, I think it needs to be authenticated. The left side of the D on the coin pictured doesn't look quite right. The D used on Genuine pieces like the one below was a little "bowed" on the left side. This D looks to be a little too straight on the left side. Bill
I would recommend sending your coin to either ANACS or NCS. The coin has excellent detail, and I think it would bring strong money if put on ebay, assuming it has been graded, and is authentic.
