I know the picture is awful. New ones will be posted later this week.

I'm just curious to know if you guys think there's even a 10% chance that it's not counterfeit.

Even with the poor image, and other questionable aspects aside, the robe appears to be of the style used in 1917.

I see what you mean about the gown near her hand... Here's a link I found on the web that I've been looking at: http://www.slqcoins.us/educational.html

The bottom of the gown looks wider and more like the 1916 to me though. And the hair is at least blurry enough at the moment that I can't see the 2nd strand.... yet :)

It'll be here tomorrow Green. I'm obviously not holding out much hope, but will post lots of pictures once it arrives. Just thought it'd be fun to learn more about these coins if nothing else.

Just got the coin. I think you guys were right. The weight is slightly off.. only 6.04 grams vs 6.25. Width & depth were correct.

Also just noticed the piece of metal on the reverse between the E & R in QUARTER. If it is counterfeit, that might be a good thing to look for on others.

Liberty looks like she's been punched in the nose and the reverse eagle looks like something out of Looney Tunes........

I've got 2 more to post for you guys. Real or fake? First is an 1844 Cent (not the overdate) and a 1909 S VDB (obviously another long shot). The rim area seemed odd to me on the 1844.

Only the large cent is showing in this last post and it is counterfeit, too. You are buying from someone who is selling modern counterfeits.

Sorry, got a phonecall and haven't been able to take pics of the other. I bought these with a bunch of challenge coins ...assumed that the coins would be fake, but that the challenge coins would be legit. Now I'm questioning whether I should ship it all back at this point and try for a PayPal refund. If they're counterfeiting an 1844 that isn't even very valuable....

Family emergency for the evening. Have to run, but will post the 99.99999% counterfeit 1909-S VDB tomorrow as a reference to others.

Tom, I'm curious. Why do you believe the 1844 is fake? The 1844 & 1909 S VDB coin are accurate on weight, diameter, etc. I have doubts about the 1909 S VDB coin, but both of the cents reflect light in the way that a genuine uncirculated coin would. I thought fakes were supposed to have more of a cast or grainy appearance?

The dots are in the right position (middle vs next to the D) on the VDB. They just aren't noticeable in this photo.

There are many different ways that fakes are made. Spark erosion, electrotype, cast, struck, etc). Counterfeits do not all have a cast or grainy appearance. IMHO you have received some struck fakes. Here is a link that will help you review the 1909-S VDB.

Perhaps you could share the seller's name?
