So I won this 1916 yesterday off my LCS bid board, took a couple of pictures and looks like possible PVC green gunk. So I soak it in acetone a while and cleaned up pretty nice. I think another soak is in order, though.
A second dip may be over kill, I think it looks great after the first but by no means should you listen to me, it's your coin, and a lovely one, so do as you please . It's great finding old nickels is decent condition, in starting to develop a fondness of five cent coins . Just did a post on a Canadian nickel then saw this here. Dig it
If you think there could still be green slime (PVC residue) on the the coin, you definitely want to soak it again in acetone. The light gold stains my be toning since it doesn't look like the original soak helped much. Can't hurt to soak again
I think I see some green between the crown of the Bison and the rim, on the front legs, and between and in front of the back legs. Obverse looks pretty good though. Will use fresh acetone, of course.
Ome more set of pics after a second soaking and in a slightly different light. I like the way it came out and the light gold/tan toning comes out a little better as well.
Thanks! Here is a better shot of the reverse, the last one is a bit fuzzy when blown up and zoomed in...
