    1816 newcomb die 3?

    Hi folks. :)
New pickup on ebay and wondering if I have the attribution right? The cuds seem to match up. What is the rarity for this coin? I think it grades out to a low VF details.

It appears you have the N-3 here. The rim break in the dentils from stars 8 -11 make the Obverse 1 clear and the leaf far past the F make Reverse C the obvious choice. Nice R4 pickup.

ps I know what you meant, but it is 1816 and not 1916...

    Thanks for the info!
I read somewhere that this coin is an R5- (can't remember where). Would that be incorrect, then?
And thanks for correcting me on the date. I think we saw it at the same time and I changed it. :)

Yes N-3 The leaf point far right below the F in OF nails the rev. That rev was used on N-3 and N-9 but on N-9 the 18 is much further apart. N-3 is down to an R-4 coin now. It is still the second rarest 1816 and brings a decent premium. Detail might make low VF, net grade is probably closer to VG-7. Copper Quotes lists it at for around $45 or so. (Copper quotes is a little old so the value is probably a little higher than that.)

Thanks. I bought it for $50 so I am happy with the purchase. :)
