I acquired a Mercury Dime collection and found what I believe is a 1916 counterfeit D. I did some digging and I might be right. Can anyone confirm or debunk...
http://reviews.ebay.com/1916-D-mercury-dime-fake-how-to-spot-them-and-avoid_W0QQugidZ10000000001222100 the placement of the D looks right to me..
Don't like the pitting in the quarter of the reverse around the mintmark, don't like the fat obverse rim at 6 o clock, don't like the shape and position of the mintmark. I'd put my money on counterfeit.
You will need to look carefully at your D mintmark & make the determination. Check out the mint mark placements in my previous thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t101697/ If your D doesn't look exactly like one of the four depicted, then it is fake. If it does look like one of the four, then we look further at the coin.... I hope this helps.
I looked further at your coin & zoomed-in on the photo. The pitting makes me think fake & the mint mark details makes me think fake. My question is, how do they make something like this?
Not quite sure... but I bet the pitting has something to do with it. Fine jewelers torch??? See how it's localized to the bottom left corner of the reverse and nowhere alse on the coin?? and it also appears to be kind of curved... similar to metal when heated.
Yeah, I can't imagine the time someone invested into counterfeiting this coin. Luckily it has no affect on my investment...
I don't know about "nowhere else on the coin"... I see the same thing on "OF" in the one o'clock rev, and on the "T" in Liberty, obverse.
