I have what I believe to be a rare 1916 D mercury dime. But I need some help from an expert to determine that what I am seeing is indeed a D mint mark. I have attached some photos but it may be hard to see the mint mark. Any suggestions on where I can take it for identification or does anyone else have one that they can share that has the same hard to read mint mark. Thanks.
Here is a close up. The mint mark has a small black pock mark on the left side and a slice line through the lower right side. Using a magnifing glass it is just a blob. Is there a way to tell the mint from the leaves or stems around the fasces?
It's an S. The S turns into a bit of a blob when it get's worn down. The Serifs of the D will stand out. Here is an example in a comparable grade.
I was just looking at a dime tonight while "Cruising The Bay" and I'm just not seeing a D. Or any mintmark. http://www.ebay.com/itm/301630639421?_trksid=p2055359.m1431.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
Sorry , a poor attempt at humor , but we weren't try to dash your hopes but let you know there was no D , but a '16-S is a nice find anyways .
I will just have to live with a nice 16 S. And my 1914 D and 1909S VDB pennies. Got those when I was 12 in 1961!.
