See? This is why I hate the hair spliting grading of the 70 point system.......LOL

I'd go AG3 as well... The obverse is higher, but the reverse took some serious wear.

Pics, however, are not big enough to determine authenticity.

Boy, it's just a hair away from Good, but I also have to go with AG3.

Perfect AG03- Nothing higher. There is too much rim gone on the reverse at 10:00-2:00 o' clock for a G04 grade.

    I will say AG-3.

I agree with Merc...I'd say the obverse is a 4 and the reverse is a 3 comparing with the ever so handy PCGS Photograde app. I'd be happy with a 3 in my collection though :)

what nobody has questiooned here is whether or not the coin is genuine. The 16-D Mercury is one of the most counterfeited coins on the planet. I need to see the mint mark before I could make a determination about authenticity. As far as grade, I'd lean towards G-4 since the 16-D will get a bump as a key date.

I seriously question ANY raw 16-D and recommend that you closely scrutinize it before you purchase one raw.

I just paid a little over $600.00 for a 1916D from a reputable coin dealer up at lake tahoe that I have done business with in the past, and my coin is just a little better than the one you are showing, so it is just a guess, but if it is not a fake, I would think somewhere between 300-400 dollars, BUT you will need to find that buyer "first".

Uh, read my earlier post, Mike.

Also, a reverse as worn as that might end up in a G4 slab, but it sure wouldn't be a PCGS/NGC slab, at least I hope not.

I'd have to say AG-03 based on the reverse. It would be worth around $550 in that condition if it is genuine. Many people will not buy a 1916-D merc without it being slabbed though since it is a heavily counterfeited coin, so I recommend spending the $25 or so to have it graded.

I apologize, Merc. You did question authenticity.

I disagree about NGC or PCGS though, they will likely bump it to G-4 due to it's being a key date.

I agree with Mike's entire post. Key grades get bumps a lot, so PCGS or NGC could grade it a g-4. However, the old saying is "there were 264,000 of these minted and at least a million in collections" is also very true. Always be careful with a 16-d.

I would also agree that it would get a grade bumb. ANy other "merc" would be a AG but that will get a G label every time.

Hey OP, send it in to PCGS. If it comes back G4 or better, I'll pay 30 bucks of the grading fee. If it comes back AG3, Mike should pay 30 bucks provided he agrees to said arrangement.
