  1. I’ve got the opportunity to buy this raw coin, weight is right, it looked correct on the first pass and the price is right, but…

    There’s weakness on the reverse lettering near the rim. There is a slightly finned rim on the obverse. IGWT looks smeared and I’m not aware of any varieties.

    Was I right to pass on this one?

    The mint mark's the wrong shape, in the wrong location, and at the wrong angle. The obverse is atrocious, as you said. And, finally, it's purporting to be a mid-grade raw example of one of the most heavily counterfeited US coins. But, hey, other than that, what could go wrong?

    Considering the left edge of the D mint mark should be more or less parallel to the left edge of E, obvious fake.

    If I were you I would only buy a certified PCGS or NGC slabbed 1.
