Ok, I was wondering if you guys saw anything off about it which would lead you to believe it wasn't genuine. If you think it's genuine, what kind of grade would it have?

    Thank you again!

If that is a good photo then IMHO it is a bad coin, i`m not a professional but I have and have seen many Mercury dimes . Doug or one other others will weigh in on it i`m sure . If you haven`t purchased it just beware .

Whats it weigh and is it attracted to a magnet?

also what is the ring around the rim on the reverse? looks to be a cast copy to me.

I can't tell you why but it just just looks wrong.

What's going on with the reverse rim? It looks almost serrated.

That is a fake IMO. The leaves interaction with the fasces is just wrong along with some of the lettering.

Not to mention that the mint mark is tilted at a very strange angle. I'd say the photo is a scan, and the coin isn't a true 1916 D (it may very well be a real 1916, but with an added mintmark.) It's great that there's a nice bit of yellow right over the mint mark...kinda draws the eye right to the very thing that's wrong with it.

I thought the angle of the MM looked funny also.

It seems to have no luster either, but maybe a scan ?

The scan never picks up the luster. It is quite shiny though. And yes the yellow spot might as well be a neon sign saying "hey look at this!"

I don't see any wear on it, so I'd call it MS if not for the added mintmark.

It kind of amazes me that mintmarks can be added to a coin. I wouldn't know how to begin to attempt to do that.

I'm no expert but the mint mark looks very strange to me and at a strange angle, it probably is a legit 1916 merc but someone faked the mint mark imo.

    Hello

I'm just a little concerned that the board not become accessory to counterfeiters by giving them feedback on their handiwork. The OP might just be asking about something he found, but we don't know that since he is new to the board.

This document is what makes me question it. (Yes this is my grandfather's coin collection which I am currently combing through for the family)

It's a high quality one, though. And from the date on the letter, prior to mass internet availability. It's a nice example of an older forgery and I'm suprised at the level of sophistication. Are you able to weigh it to the .00 grams? What does the edge reeding look like? Keep it as an example so you can compare in the future. If it was cast it should weigh considerably less, as the metal (even if it's a silver fake) wouldn't have been compressed through striking and would be less dense. If it's a real 1916 with added mintmark, try giving it an isopropyl alcohol bath (rubbing alcohol). Just soak it. Don't rub it or the luster will be gone. The D may come off if it's an added mintmark. If not, then no harm, no foul, just let the alcohol evaporate.... Or if everyone in the family hates it sell it and the letter to me so I can have a fake to compare with in the future :)
