Here we have a 1916-D dime I came across from an old collection, all diagnostics look pretty good except for the filled D. I've had a few of these, and the low grade ones like this one (Good-) tend to be easy to spot - this one has me baffled. Decent shape, position, etc. A lot of trouble to go through for a fake low grade specimen... any opinions? Worth the trip to a TPG?
I'm not an expert on these, but since I've been in the market for them, the majority of the AG-G graded 16-d's have a solid mm as shown in this photo. It appears to have the correct half-moon shape. I don't know about the positions, but my initial thought is that it is genuine. Can you show a pic of the whole coin?:thumb: edit: I always browse heritage sold auctions in regards to a valuable coin. They have hundreds of top tier certified low grade 16-d mercs with huge pictures, so I'd recommend comparing it with those. http://coins.ha.com/?ic=task-coins
Thanks, can't believe I didn't think about Heritage - first 16-D I looked at (ANACS AG3) had a filled D, looked EXACTLY like my coin.
Mint mark shape and position look good. These are commonly found with filled Ds. you asked about a trip to a TPG, in the case of a 16-D Merc, I would almost always say yes. It is the most commonly counterfeited coin out there.
