What do you guys think of this quarter that just ended as far as grade and what it sold at? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=200266347953 It was at 17.91 with about an hour to go. Bid up at the end. Did somebody get a good deal on this or not? I thought about buying it, but of course, I would have had to pay who knows how much over that final bid. I just don't know. It looks like XF range to me.
I'd say AU-55 , but the gash on her eye should lower it , the price is fine exspecially if you like the coin , looks nice and original . rzage
Nice and original? Looks cleaned and re-toned to me. And I defiantly would not grade it AU, XF at most actually. It has a lot of faded places. And what is up with the wavy rim where the denticles are?
Hey it's just an opinion as is yours , I said I' d grade it AU without the gash on her eye , as with any picture it's hard to grade a coin , from what I have to go on , the pictures it has AU details , I said the gash would probably lower it , go look at any PCGS OR NGC slab , I think you'd be hard pressed to find a EXF with the details of this coin . As with the cleaning you think it was cleaned and retoned , it might of well have been , but I didn't see it , like I said it's just an opinion , give yours don't attack mine . rzage
Heres an EXF for comparisan http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=68104&Lot_No=64167#Photo rzage
I wasn't beating on your opinion, I was just disagreeing with you The more I look at this, the more I believe this is a counterfeit? Could it be? And moving on to its grade, it also has a huge where spot below the crown with the hair, and also on the reverse with the feathers on the eagle. I don't know about you, but those wavy lines keep me away from buying this.
Fair price, not extremely attractive. If that is a VF, I'll buy them all day long. Anyone have any 1896 S or 1913 S VF's that look like that?
grades AU55 OR net XF45 Nice coin with AU55 details I think. The photo looks to me like the coin was cleaned much in its life. The surfaces look dull (even in the protected areas) but that could just be the lighting. If the cleaning is within market acceptable limits, then it grades AU53 or AU55. Otherwise it is a net XF40 or XF45. A set of Barbers in this condition would be pretty awesome. Very best regards, collect89
Scrooge strikes again sorry Doug , Spock told me to haunt you while he's away . I can see I was wrong on the AU-55 , but if it didn't have the blemishes , seems to me the details would make it low AU or high EF . What would it grade on just its details , no eye gouge and cheekmark ? rzage:hail:
Sorry Ryan , was having a bad day yesterday :headbang:, I won't kick my dog , but you wre there encil:, and I took your post wrong , I don't think it's fake , probably just bad pics . rzage:hatch::hammer:
Awwwww - and it was so peaceful I can't buy it Rusty. Look at the reverse, the wing tips are worn flat, the eagles head is worn flat, parts of the shield and parts of the tail feathers are worn flat. An XF grade just cannot be justified for a coin in that condition. And that doesn't even take into account anything on the obverse. ANA standards say - XF40 rev - High points of the head, neck, wings, and tail are lightly worn but all details are clearly defined. That just doesn't exist on that coin. Lightly worn just cannot be defined as flat.
Thanks , I wish everyone in the know would point out the whys of their opinions like that .:thumb: rzage
It looks like the xf-40 photo in my "making the grade" book, the photos in the ANA and Photograde guides are horrible. There is also an arc-shaped mark on the cheek, I can't figure out if it's ON or IN the surface. I'd be hard pressed to offer more than a vf price for it, if I were interested.
To be quite honest with you, I never, ever, recommend that anyone try to grade coins by comparing them to a picture in a book. Use the descriptions in the book and forget the pictures - don't even look at them.
I'd say EF-40 condition and I'd subtract a few points for the gash, rim ding, and being cleaned and would give it a VF-35 final grade with a CLEANED comment. As to price paid, I think they overpaid (Ebay standards) but they paid about what it is worth (full book value). I wouldn't have paid more than 25 bucks for it but that's me, I'm a cheapskate. Still a nice coin! :thumb: Ribbit
I'm glad you talked about the reverse Doug. I just looked at this post for the first time. 1st I looked the coin over Obv then Rev then I read all of the posts. Besides the marks on the Obv. and wondering how long ago it was cleaned (although not harshly) the wear didn't look that bad. Starts and hat looked good and even. Then I looked at the reverse and said what happened? All those flat parts that you mentioned I noticed straight away. Not a bad looking coin but I would not have even thought AU with that reverse. Thanks for the grade and explanation!
Very good discussion. I was kind of thinking the same thing. For the year and at the time, it looked a lot better than any of the other Barbers on there and so many of them just look like hell. I guess I'm not really that surprised that somebody would pay more. Here's a vague question for you guys. Roughly, I wonder if there's any way of knowing approximately how long a Barber would have to circulate before Liberty was worn off the headband? Because it's gone on almost every one you see. So it must not have taken much or they circulated for a long time and nobody saved that many. One or the other. To me, this series seems to be one of the most worn out there. I ended up buying one in VG. I got it today. The redbook says these are supposed to weigh 6.25 grams. This one weighs 6.00 grams even. The most off anything I've weighed to date has been.
Vess: It took quite a long time to produce the wear to remove the Liberty. In fact, Barbers circulated well into the 1960's. (yes, they did, I found a Barber quarter, forget the date, in change on my paper route once. An Indian Head cent (1909) in change, and my father brought me a V-nickel he got in change in Penn Station, change for a newspaper.)
In 1963 I was 10 and searching for wheaties and Mercs . I think in all that time I found maybe 1 Barber , so while they were in change they were extremely rair in the Chicago area , it was even hard to find Mercs. though I gotta admit I never had the money to search rolls . rzage
