My buddy since first grade just showed me his 1914-D Quarter Eagle that he bought off a coin dealer who advertised in Coin World. I told him that I have a NGC MS62 and we compared coins. My coin had some red coloring on it but his was a perfect strike. His coin looked like it was minted yesterday multible times. It almost looked cameo but the bust looked like poured gold without any inperfections. I said that it may be from China. The coin was not slabbed and only in a plastic sleave. I told him that old gold should have some red on it or it could be fake. Am I mistaken?
No, not all "old gold" has red in it. The coin could be quite real and dipped, or it could be counterfeit, as you suggest, but I wouldn't use red or the lackthereof to make a determination...Mike
From what I've read in the past, counterfeits are out there but they are obvious if you know what to look for (like minute bubbles). You can take it to a coin show and any dealer familiar with quarter eagles 1908-1929 should be able to authenticate for you. Good luck and that is a great coin to have.
