Hi all and Happy Holidyas . I need your feedback on this 14-d that is available at auction. This has porosity on the obverse. Does this look like it improperly cleaned at some point? Would you bid on it? Much appreciation from you the experts.
Going to agree that the surface especially the obverse is strange looking. The coin overall definitely has a cleaned and retoned look either way. Not sure on authenticity I'm sure a more knowledgeable member in that regard will chime in though.
All I know that they guarantee it to be authentic. But they do recognize the obverse is strange. Could cleaning cause this porous surface?
another thing, I personal think it has been cleaned but, I would wait a little longer for the other guys to give their opinions. Thanks!
Based on the placement of the date and mintmark, it looks genuine to me, but it has certainly been messed with. it looks like it had some surface corrosion and was whizzed off.
I appreciate the great insight to all! I'm looking for a 14-D if anyone has an extra one Enjoy your Holidays!!
I believe a fake based on the shape of the mintmark. Also, I do not believe the defects on the surface go into the metal, they appear to be above the metal plane which would indicate non-mint dies , maybe made by spark erosion although with out seeing in person, I would not dismiss casting.
I don't like it. I've never seen a 14-D like that. Nearly flawless, highly porous obverse. That does not come from cleaning. I'm not sure how it was created but I don't believe it came from the Mint. If you want a '14-D buy one in a major TPG slab. Lance.
I will say I saw the exact listing myself. I put it on my watch list. I looked at the photo you showed, thought about it some more, and finally went back and took it off my list. I just wasn't comfortable.
I think it is authentic - the D is properly placed. But there is some strange cleaning happening, as the cleaning of the obverse is different from the reverse. I would certainly pass - there will be many opportunities to find a 14-D you like.
In personal collections sure, not really anymore in most dealer cases advertising online and especially not in auctions
