Recently, I’ve just started to check my buffalos, and this one seems like a possibility. I’m wondering if there are any other varieties known for this overdate (the CONECA listings don’t seem to list all the variations – I also have a 1914/3-S in EF – and it’s not listed). Does CONECA mention overdates, even if they are not DDOs? Thanks in advance, A.J.
There are supposed to be several possible (1914/3 S) and a couple of definite 4/3 for Philly for this year.
MorganLady - Thanks for your input. I thought the last pic (close up) pretty much confirmed the presence of a three. I know there are variations - like early and late die stages - but I don't see too many buffalos on this site (except that wonderful 1916 DDO certified at AU-55 last year). I have all the buffalos except a 1914-D, and a 1913-D Type II (the errors remain to be checked thoroughly). All of these were acquired prior to 1973 - so you never know? Yes, I thiink it's probably the variety you mentioned. Thanks again, A.J.
My guess is that they will eventually find 1914/3-D's as well since I suspect this is caused by an overdated working hub.
I spoke with Bill Fivaz about this over the summer. He has examined several supposed 1914/3-D Buffalo Nickels and used overlays to compare them to 1914/3-P Nickels. He is convinced that they do exist and that they will be eventually recognized.
