I got this 1913 I bought it as a P mint mark, but looks to have a weak s mint mark I was wondering what others think of it, thanks Phineas
Edit: I had a duhh moment; Buffalos were not minted with P mintmarks. I'm not seeing a weak S though. It looks like tarnishing or something like that is making you see something. It's happened to me. It could just be the picture though.
Thanks, that is what I think also, the mint mark if it were one does not seem like it would be that wore down compared to the condition of the rest of the coin.
Corrosion can do strange things to fine details of a coin. I think you have an S mint coin that has been corroded and damaged the mintmark. With the aid of a loupe you should be able to tell fairly quickly in-hand I would think. Much larger photos might help too.
As Leadfoot said, wear most likely has nothing to do with it. Mintmarks don't usually wear in conjunction with the rest of the coin because the relief is much lower. Corrosion, however, is a whole different animal. It can happen anywhere on the coin, and can do some really interesting things. Looking at it blown up more on my computer I do sort of see something. But it's been damaged quite a bit. Edit: looking even harder now, haha, it looks like the bottom of what does look like an S is missing.
The mintmark on Buffalos is below FIVE CENTS. What you are seeing is an F for James Earle Fraser; the designer of this coin.
