Would anyone care to weigh in on this Buffalo? I think I paid too much for it and I have been told it was cleaned - although why anyone would clean an AU coin I don't. It's a uniform beautiful gold color. Sorry for my bad photos.

It does look to have AU details but the surfaces/color of the coin just doesn't seem natural (could be cleaned). The pics are just too small when uploaded to the forum to tell for sure though. You really need to upload to a site like photobucket and link your pics from there in your post so that a larger picture can be shared.

    Photobucket

I was trying to figure out how to get a more detailed picture uploaded - Thanks for the tip - I'll try Photobucket.

Is this better? I'm not sure exactly how this works so here goes.

Photobucket is pretty cool - here's the reverse. A guy I know told me he thought this was a fake. What do y'all think?

On his cheek bone it looks like a plug and I'm sure it's just the pic. Waiting to see the reverse. :kewl:

Why did someone think it was a fake? How does it look to you, and have you placed it side by side against another buffalo nickel?

He put it under microscope and said that the "United States" verbiage was a little less sharp and more rounded like a sand mold coin... Another coin we looked at was sharper but that could have just been the die at the mint it seemed to me... Why would anyone fake a 1913d t1 instead of one of the rare ones?

There are many fake buffalo nickels. On this forum I have heard of two different types of fake buffalos. The ones that are shinier and have faults in a few areas and the fake that looks like an obvious casted buffalo and the coloring is off. On the casted buffalo the weight is off as well. Your nickel doesn't look fake to me but maybe someone else is more experienced. So did you pay more than $30?

Yep, being a newbie to this I thought it had mint luster on it (it's a beautiful goldish color) so I paid 60 for it...... Probably a cheap lesson.

Yes, just another day at the office, "learning lessons". That's part of coin collecting as well. Unfortunately almost all coin collectors have paid too much at one time or another, it seems to come with the territory. :D
