Both of them I own have a filled in S. I worried about their authenticity, until I noticed that all of those I have seen on Teletrade or Heritage also seem to have a filled in S. Is this characteristic of the coin? I am not familiar with coin photographic techniques, so I can provide no pictures.

Well no time like the present to begin working on your photography skill. Pictures will help a lot - but yes on worn examples it does look filled.

Is the coin crisp enough to see whether are not it's "filled"

Is the coin crisp enough to see whether are not it's "filled" or just mashed or worn from circulation?

If your coin is below a VF you can usually expect a filled looking S.
