Can anyone tell me if this might be a coin error ? The rim is exceptionally high and the coins circumfrence is slightly smaller than a regular penny. There are no markings on the edge and it is perfectly round. Any info would be great
Welcome to Cointalk Patt01. I don't know if it would qualify as an error but definitely seems to stand out a bit. It looks like you scanned these images, do you have a decent camera you could use to try and take regular pictures as well? Does the rim stand out above the other raised surfaces of the coin? I don't think it would add any value especially since the overall condition is not that great, but maybe someone who is more familiar will chime in here shortly. J
You cannot stamp letters on the rim without flattening the rim. That coin is PMD. I cannot tell you what was done, but it was done after the minting.
some folks calls these spooned coins and others calls them dryer coins. when a person has a lot of idle time on their hands like say a prisoner they tap the coins millions of times with a spoon or other object and this rounds of the edges of the coins and making them smaller in diameter. the same effect can be created by the coin being in a clothes dryer spinning for a long time. either way they are not worth much over face value.
Thanks for the info, I did use my camera at about 10X but the flash went off. The edges are much higher than the rest of the coin. What confused me was that the coin is perfectly round. Someone sure did have a lot of time on thier hands
sometimes if a coin is in someones pocket and it gets washed and dried it can get stuck in the dryer and get damaged.
Welcome to the forum Patt01! It is post mint damage, as mentioned above. The first home dryer was sold in the 1930s, but the depression and customs didn't make them very common for a while. I am a little surprised by a 1912 cent, but I have found many oddities in the change that takes trips in my dryer. No matter how hard I try to take out all change, my laundry room has noise quite often. Jim
Thanks for the welcome and the info Jim, I know what you mean about the dryer. If it's not busy bouncing a few coins around, It's busy eating one of my socks. You have a really great forum here. I'm a semi-newbe at collecting. I was given my Dad's collection of a few hundred coins so I hope you all dont mind a lot of questions and pic's as I (hopefully) seach for that retirement coin.....Patt01
