Hi i found a 1912 D penny not sure what it would be a chip or crack. Its right under the W going from the hair to the W I'm new to this so just branching out for advice. It is pretty worn but its nice to know. Thanks in advance.

It looks like a die crack. As you've probably guessed, it doesn't add any value, but still intersesting

Alright thats what i was thinking, it just looks raised is all. Would that still be a crack? Just trying to figure out the diffrences in different errors.

The crack is in the die. As the die is pressed into the planchet, metal from the planchet flows into the crack leaving a raised line on the coin. I would classify a chip as when part of the die breaks off, such as the inner loops of dates, letters, MM, or “BIE” errors. Both will be raised on the coin. I’m sure paddyman or someone has a link to a formal definition

There must be a hole in the bottom of the "W" and it is leaking.
