In sorting through some more wheats I found lying around the house, I made an interesting discovery: a 1911-S. It appears to be in VG to F condition, but it is very much discolored. I'm interested in opinions on how much the coloration affects the value. I'm sorry the photo quality isn't higher. I'm having auto zoom issues with my camera.

    Any thoughts about the value?

by that pic I cannot distinguish whether the MM is an S or a D. Honestly, I would only buy this coin for the $1 or $2 opening bid of an auction, and even then only if the shipping were free or I got several lots so as to disperse shipping costs. The condition and color put me off in such a way that I feel I will probably find an equal or better one, one day.

That looks to be VF details - corroded and/or coated with something. So I think your "color" will affect the price a lot. If you can find the right person, you might manage $20 for it.

I wasn't sure that there was enough separation of the cheek bone and jaw bone to be VF, but I really should have known it wasn't going to be VG. As for the reverse, it looks the same, except that there aren't any areas where the copper color appears. The gray color is more "solid." From handling it myself, (it went into my Whitman folder, as I didn't have a 1911-S in there) it seems that it's coated with something rather than being corroded, but I'll admit I'm not the best at determining that, so I could be dead wrong. The great thing about it is that I pulled it from a roll that I probably paid $3 for.
