I started an earlier thread asking whether this one was legit, and the consensus was that it looked good. As always, the scratches are harsher in the photos than in-hand, but the design details are clearer in these photos than in-hand, too. This is the weekend of the Raleigh Money Expo, the biggest show in these parts. I'm thinking to shop the coin around there -- I'd consider putting it on eBay, but if I can get a good offer locally, cash in hand is nice as well. So, what would be a good offer from a dealer at a show for this? And, in contrast, what would be a good eBay asking price? A problem-free AU53 fetched $1399 on eBay recently, but the only other recent ones I found were MS examples that fetched the higher prices you'd expect. Thoughts, anyone?
Well, reaction at the show was... subdued, let's say. Several dealers appeared not to "notice" that it was a key date until I pointed it out (including one that has always treated me quite fairly; in his case, I think it was an honest mistake). One or two said they wouldn't be confident of its authenticity until they saw it in a slab. The best offer I got was $450-500, well below what I was hoping for. So, it came home with me.
On the bright side, the same guy was offering 4.75x for 40%, only .12 below Provident's current buy price, so I unloaded $50 worth of Kennedys for a bit more than I expected. Also sold $10 worth of dimes for $120, so I'll be able to go a while before the next trip to the ATM.
