I got a killer bargain on a 1911-d cent upgrade for my lincoln cent collection.:hail: The pictures dont display it, but there are hints of red and luster around the rim and some of the letterings on the reverse, and significant cartwheel luster with lots of red showing through in the fields of the obverse. I'm sure this coin is at least in the AU range, but am not good at grading the higher end lincolns, or differentiating between weak strike and circulation wear. any input?
I am not sure why you are worried about a weak strike. That one is a pretty descent strike. I think I am seeing rubs on the jaw and cheek, but the ear looks original. That just does not look right to me. Not what you are looking for, but I am going to say either a 55 or a 64 BR if the coin has enough luster.
Well now I don't feel so bad , if a guy like you with your exsperience has it at either a 55 or 64 , or is because it's a picture and not in hand . rzage:smile
Here is the original ebay pic. Not sure if it will help. I'll try to take some better pictures here soon.
Jack, Do you mean that the ebay pic makes the coin look cleaned? or that the seller modified the original picture to smooth out the bumps? I am certain that this coin has not been cleaned, but I agree that the ebay pic makes the color look very blended compared to how it actually is. I am really pleased with this coin overall. It looks very much like a lot of common lincolns that I have from the early 50s, with a sharp/splotchy brown crust forming on the outside over the underlying original red cartwheel luster.:smile Honestly though, the price I paid for this coin was unreal. I'm sad for the economy right now, but the lessening demand allows for some killer deals on the internet imo.
thanks. It's funny how 1 little cent can get me so excited that I have to post it and share it with the world.....I have a coin collecting addiction bug, and it has bitten me hard. The only bad thing about this cent is that it outshines most of the rest of my early lincolns which are mostly in the vf range.
The only significant "nick" I see on the reverse in one the N in "ONE". Take a closer look at that. Unless I missed something, it is a die crack, not a nick. Even if I am wrong, it would still make 63 for me.
lol. the long squiggly line on the left side of the "N" in "ONE" was actually a hair that happened to be on the cent. It is not there anymore. There is a small nick underneath the right side of the "N", that you can faintly see in the picture. Here is another pic of the obverse.
I don't see any wear on that view, but my monitor is crappy. The coin just does not look like it has much luster. However, it may will be just be the pic or it may even indicate that the coin has been cleaned. I would guess 63 BR, but if the luster is there it could go 64
Yeah, the pics are a bit deceiving. It definitely has luster and original surfaces. The main reason I thought it may be AU is the Lincoln's beard isn't as defined as in other certified BU 11-ds I've looked at. It doesn't look like rub, but could it be a weak strike? Anyways, I paid $11 dollars for it, so I can't complain.
YOU CAN'T COMPLAIN FOR $11, NICE DEAL!! :thumb: I'll say AU-55, and nice at that. :thumb: Congrats! Phoenix
The lack of detail on the beard is not necessarily due to a weak strike. As a die's use continues, it wears away and is polished away and the fine detail go away. That is one reason collectors will pay a premium for EDS (early die state) coins. Regardless, nice coin. If you find any more for $11, let me know.
I agree I can't see any traces of wear on the coin... Details on the obverse are mushy but not worn. It's definitely a MS coin. On first blush I wanted to call this a 63 BR, but I'm really tempted to bump it up to a 64
YES, It is a very nice coin, we just have to get the color right, lol. Seller pics look " dippy" and the OP's are dark. It sure is a nice 11-D tho, this has the nice full mintmark, they are so oftern seen with the mushy, faded D....
