Very interesting read. Something to keep an eye out for. Also it makes sense to really look over those 1909-S's very carefully on the reverse for faint V.D.B.'s.

Probably because it was a poorly abraded reverse die and it still showed weak V.D.B. details.

I read the same story from a link on Coinflation.com the other day, I'm not sure I give the story a whole lot of credibility given that it was last updated back in 2008-9 and is rather apocryphal. Of course images would give a bit of verity to such an assertion.

Yeah I'd love to see the 1910 matte proof Fivaz had found especially since only two reverse dies were used. And I own the book by Wexler and Flynn, second edition, and it doesn't say anything about a 1910 vdb. Unless it's in the first edition and not the second.

When this story first came out, everyone was looking for them. I don't think a solid example of one has ever been found.

You see, weak VDBs do exist. They occurred when the engravers at the Mint tried to grind the VDB off the dies, but didn't do it all the way.

I got into it with a very credentialed author on the subject. He said all VDB dies were destroyed.
The start of the conversation was the '09 cent I purchased, from an also reputable source, with distinct milling/abrading on the reverse.
The rumored 'VDB' will only be proven by an example.

He is talking about an 09 S VDB he got from a dealer who didn't know it was a VDB

I cherry picked a mislabeled 1909-S a few years ago. It was listed as a 1909 VDB for $17 in VG condition. If not for that error I would never own one lol.

Wow, I can see missing the VDB, but how do you miss the S and still know it's a 1909? Lol

I have been exited about this thread for a while. I found a nice 10 Lincoln last Friday,
The only reason I paid more than Au was because it had a line about the size of the D in VDB. At least close to the area of the D,
    I have a couple of pics, 10 close up.JPG 1910 linc obv.JPG 1910 linc rev.JPG
