1910 gold coin

Disclaimer: I know NOTHING about coins. My father passed along time ago and I recently found some of his stuff. In this pile of stuff, were a bunch of bicentential quarters and a gold coin from 1910.

The coin has an indian head on one side with the date and an eagle on the other. The edges are lined with stars with three "ridges" separating sections of the stars. It is a $10 coin.

I have looked on the internet and the only thing that mine does not have is a mint stamp. It looks like there was never a stamp there (as opposed to having it scraped off). The coin is in great shape; at least to my novice eye. I have never seen a coin look like this that I have come across.

It is possible this coin is fake. This is something my dad would have thought was funny.

Any guesses on worth? Is it fake? Do all coins always have a mint stamp on them?

    Thx for any help.

    [IMG] to Cointalk.

Except for silver nickles during WWII, Philadelphia coins had no mintmarks until 1980.

You have described a $10 gold piece, known as an "Eagle", and if genuine it is worth somewhere between ~$250 to $15,000+, depending on its grade. Without a clear picture of both sides there is no way to guess whether it is genuine or counterfeit; or, if genuine, what it would grade. [IMG]

You should post a picture if it is possible. The value does vary greatly.

Yes a pic would be heplful because what you have describe does not sound like a Indian Head $10 Eagle. The $10 Eagle has the stars and date on the obverse with the Indian Head and not on the reverse with the Eagle. I have look and can not find anything that you are describing. It may be a Commemorative Coin or may be a fake. You may want to take it to a local coin shop or dealer if you can not post a pic. Good luck.

Yes, it looks exactly like that. I think the one I have is in a little bit better shape. The date and the edges are clearer and the color is consistent on the whole coin (it looks like that one is a bit discolored but maybe it is just the compression).

I asked a local "coin" dealer and he said he would give me $350 on the spot.

Thx to everyone who responded for all of the quick responses.

dsirl, I'd like to see a picture of it too. We could probably try to help you decide if the coin dealers are offering you a fair price or not for it if you're looking to sell it. Also, if it's not already in some kind of holder, make sure you're only holding it by the edges, don't rub it or try to polish it and get it in some kind of coin holder that will protect it as soon as possible.

Since it is your dads, I think you should hold onto it. Plus, it would be a nice thing to give your kids when they get older.

Anyways, we can help you a lot more if you posted a picture of your coin, that way we could give you a good estimate on the grade and value.
