I found a 1909 VDB penny for $30 in MS (60-63). I dont own one yet, but i really want one. I have just recently got into collecting Lincoln Cents, so can anyone give me some insight on this?
They are great coins. I think the story of the VDB is the most interesting story when it comes to Lincoln cents. I got mine for 15 dollars in about XF I think. I don't know current prices off the top of my head, but I would probably buy the one your looking at.
Certified or Raw..? If certified BY A TPG that is about what you would expect to pay. IF it is raw, save your money for now. Do you have pics of this coin? I know VDB's very very.... ok very well. Actually it is the only coin I know! Read more here: http://www.cointalk.com/t167212/ Not sure if this link will work but this is to PAGE 27 of my VDB set that includes MS64BN to 63BN Page 28 has MS62BN - MAKE SURE TO CLICK the LITTLE pLUS SIGN BY THE DESCRIPTION. http://www.pcgs.com/SETREGISTRY/MemberImageGallery.aspx?m=27235&sc=1209&Page=27 You will find images like this on that page. Do you have a picture of the coin you are thinking about? I have dozens upon dozens of MSBN coins that I would be happy to hook you up with. Not looking for a sale - just wanting to make sure that you get what you are paying for.
Just my two cents...... Are you thinking about putting together a complete set of Lincoln cents? I did this once. Actually, I ended up buying the entire set twice. First I purchased the set quickly in all sorts of different grades. Then, I upgraded each coin one-by-one until I had the entire set in the AU grade that I really wanted. So you don't make the same mistake, I recommend that you think a little bit about what grade you want your set & then focus on getting coins that match each other in that grade. Otherwise, you will end up with a MS65 red 1909 VDB and the coin right next to it will be a VG brown coin.
For me, half the fun is upgrading coins. I'm sure I'll buy more VDB's in the future, but I'm still happy with my purchase of the XF. I suppose it just depends on what kind of collector you are and how much you are willing to spend (and lose if you want to resell in the future).
