XF40 - too much wear for an AU.

I agree, plus I question the originality of the color. It is relatively difficult for a copper coin to have that much wear and still be that color. I'd be unwilling to pay more than a dollar or two for that coin.

    Sorry about that.

thanks everyone, i guess the scanner really does not do this coin any justice, i'm going to take it somewhere and have it looked at, maybe i need a better way to photograph coins.

No offense Joe, but your scanner did a great job. What you need to do is learn what wear looks like on different coins. With this one, there is wear on all of the higher points. And the true high points of the coin aren't even there anymore - they're worn off.

Take a look at your own pic again, the lapel of the coat. See how the right side of it is a lighter color than the left edge - that's wear. Now look at the beard - right on the point of his chin and all the way up to the ear - that's wear. Same thing for the cheekbone, the ear and the area directly above the ear. Now look at the hair - see how it is two different colors, the high points of the hair are a lighter color while the lower areas (the protected areas) are still dark.

In a nutshell - the dark areas are original mint luster and the light areas are wear marks.
