1st of all, thanks for the help in posting pics! Is there such a thing as a weak S or where the mint used a die that used to be an S mint and they retooled it to make it a P? or am I in dreamland(lol) I've taken my pics with a Macro setting and it looks to me to be a VERY WEAK S mintmark. Any info would be great. ThanksI have to get back to you all after work is calling and I haven't figured on how to get a pic on here yet that is 100kb or less(mine is 169) I will work on it and resubmit thanks
I moved your question here where it will be seen better. I don't think that any of the dies in 1909 were re-tooled from a S to a P....that might point to the coin being a fake....they might have worked and messed up and tried to take off the S. Speedy
Nope, there arn't any reports of retooled die. Also, the strikes on many S-V.D.B's were typically very sharp throughout the die life.
Kind of sounds like someone was playing around trying to make a S VDB out of a plain VDB. I guess it could be done but not sure how. Lots of fake coins around nowadays. I just bought a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel that was one of the worst imatations possible.
If this is what your talking about, let us know.I took your pic and marked where there looks like an S but it is not an S mintmark.
One thing wrong with that, you're seeing something that isn't there. Look at a pic of a genuine coin - HERE
The s on the s vdb is very precise diagnostically. The mint mark is NEVER weak and the top "serif" should be drastically larger than the bottom one. This type of S was used on the 1909 and 10 cents only and the mint mark was retooled for the 1911 and on cents. I see the weak shadow of an "s" on the first set of pictures but it is incorrect, sorry NO s on that 1909
the mind is a powerful tool... it allows you to see patterns in randomness... or see things that really aren't there.
Thank you all very much for the info! Guess I was just wishing it was there...Maybe on the next coin. Also, Thanks GDJMSP for posting my pics! Much appreciated
