Welcome to CT. Enjoy your stay.

Is it authentic? It appears to be. You might check here http://www.cointalk.com/t78043/, but your VDB, MM and N all look good to me.

What is the value? Yours appears to be in fine condition, but it will probably get graded as fine details / scratched. In fine, it would be worth just about $1,000, but scratched, it would be $700 - $800. You scratch is not that bad, so I would guess you would go closer to the $800 side.

I am a little worried about the wear comparison between the Obverse and Reverse. The Reverse has nice stalks and not TOO much wear, where as the Obverse looks VG at best. Not to mention the rim on the OBV is remarkably high for such a worn coin.

    Hi,

As I mentioned elsewhere, The coin looks like it is trying to mimic the position of the mint mark seen on what is called obverse die #3. What worries me is the deep and very circular pattern seen around the"S".

I would not totally authenticate it based upon a picture but it looks a little suspect to me.

    Thanks,
    Bill

That was my first impression also, but when I looked closer, that is a hair (or dust) above the "S" that makes it look like a depression around the "S". I do not believe that it is really there.

i edited a post to indicate die #3 instead of #2....In any case. I can't say for sure but all the pictures of it show the S in that circle.

I know the pictures could be better... hoping I can get some better ones over the weekend with natural light. To dark with out a flash and over exposed with a flash.

I believe you are correct with your thought.

The other issue that I mentioned in another forum and it seems to have been supported is that it may not be the correct type of S for the year. It was suggested that it looked like a mintmark used only on 1928 S cents.
