Anyone care to take a stab at how much this is worth, and what grade it may be? Thank you! (yes, another one found scraping through the collection)
You just happen to be finding all these key dates? Where is this "penny collection" you've been digging around in from? Just asking for a little background on where you're getting a collection full of key dates. I'm not good at detecting counterfeits, but I do have my suspicions. EDIT: Also, that looks too low relief.
this coin looks very suspicious to me. the only way to be 100% sure it is even a legit key date i would send it in for grading.. im always very wary of any key date that is raw and in such nice shape. cody
They're from incomplete collections. Note evidence below: Also I was amazed as well. The first picture is the collection it was taken out of. Every single coin is either red or red brown in the whole book.
The cheaper way would be to find an experienced dealer near the OP who could authenticate these coins for him.
Well, the source makes me feel better, but the coin still looks odd to me. That 1916D merc was a fake, hopefully this coin is not. But even if it is from an old collection, these have been faked for a long time.
It wouldn't surprise me if they were fake. This being the case I've sent them all off to PCGS so I'll report back and let everyone know when I get them back in two weeks. -JP
Got it back today, and good news! MS64RB PCGS (sorry about the bad pictures. I'm away from my scanner) http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/26088659/
awesome man!!! that is really great news!!! so far with the 1909 cents I have only a couple the best being a 1909-P VDB in XF
For what it's worth, here's an older thread containing most of the diagnostic information required to determine if a '09-S-VDB is genuine. http://www.cointalk.com/t78043/
WOW....nice coin! At first, I thought it might be a fake, but all of the correct diagnostics are there in your original pics. CONGRATS! 64 seems like a harsh grade, I would 65RB that coin all day long!
