The only word I can think of is gorgeous, but that does not come close.

 

Gee, on that 09 S VDB, one click more and the value would be +$13,000 (approx.). It' still worth plenty, but checked just for the fun of it.

 

Just a great looking set. I knew you had a great 09 set but these photos really show it well. My favorites would be the 09-S dime and the 09-D quarter. What a great year for coins and what a great group. Thanks for sharing.:thumb:

Congrats and thanks for sharing this. Saying, "nice set" doesn't even come close.

 

102 years and still shimmering magnificently; if only you could know the story for each one and what it went through to get to your collection. I guess that wouldn't be too exciting though, judging by these coins' surfaces I doubt the histories were too astonishing. Sitting somewhere nice and safe so as to keep superb condition! Thanks for sharing this, it is an example of a one of a kind, top of the line set.

 

Yeah, part of the reason I submitted the set for SecurePlus was that I thought several had a chance at getting + grades and/or upgrades. Of course, I didn't get as many bumps as I had hoped but not a big deal.

Note that the 1909-S Barber Half I have in PCGS MS64 was previously in an NGC MS65 slab... I think the coin is really close to MS65 and thought it was a great candidate to get an MS64+ grade, but I think PCGS doesn't really like blast white dipped coins as much lately.

I also thought my 1909-O quarter in MS64 had a shot at a + grade as it really is nice for a 64 and have seen worse looking Barber Quarters of other dates in 65 or 66. Oh well.

Well then you can just imagine my surprise/shock when the SVDB was originally returned to me in a PCGS MS67RD slab after regrading!!!!!!! WOW WOW WOW!! We're talking a six-figure coin no doubt. Of course it ended up being too good to be true and PCGS ultimately informed me that a mechanical error was made on my submission and I had to send it back to get the "correct" grade put on the label... still sort of painful to think about what could have been

I really enjoy thinking about the history of each coin too and wonder who the previous caretakers may have been. I try to keep the history of each as far back as I know, but for most that doesn't go back very far. I have traced the ownership of a few of them back to the 1970s though. But any further than that doesn't seem to possible unless I obtain lots of really old auction catalogs and get lucky.
