Hello Guys, I found a penny from my grandfather's collection that I noticed is beautifully toned. It was stored in a leather purse for years. I have read that real leather is good for toning copper coins. Is this correct? Why is it that some copper coins tone better than others? There were several other wheat pennies in the purse that were the normal dark brown color. I understand that there are collectors out there who search for beautifully toned coins and pay a premium toned coins . Is it worth it to get this coin graded by a TPG?
That is a beaut! First of all, DON'T CLEAN IT! Second, put the thing on some paper and cover it with another piece of paper or something and don't touch it. If you need to touch it, touch it BY THE RIMS only. That is also a woody toned coin, which is when the metal doesn't mix properly. I would say that is a MS65 RB, plus the nice purple hints and the woody pattern, this is a very nice coin that would go on ebay for around $50 if graded MS65 RB. I might be interested if you are selling it.
Thanks for your reply! I was hoping you would see this post because I saw that you liked toned coins! Yes I would like to get it graded and think about selling it to an enthusiastic collector of toned coins. I have another wheat penny that I would like your opinion about. See photo..
