I found these in some rolls purchased off of eBay. They are all in excellent shape and have some very strange toning.
The first one is what is known as a woody, and it's not toning. It's from an improper alloy mix when the planchet was made. That's what causes that wood grained effect. The second one is toning.
Do your 1909 cents have the VDB initials near the rim on the lower reverse?? If so, there are two doubled die obverse varieties for the 1909 VDB Lincoln. However, the from the pic posted above it doesn't look like either of the two varieties to me.
Nope, none of them are VDB's but the first two have some strange markings after the M in Unum. The wood grain one has that cresent shape marking after the M and the second one has a chunk of copper impeding a full M.
I really like the wood grain on the frist one. I have always like dthe woodgrain on any cents. The other two have decent toining. It seems like you are buying a lot of rolls of off ebay. How have you been doing with what they cost verses what you get out of them.
For the most part I am very satisfied. I have learned what to look for but even that isn't a solid thing. I go by instinct now and since I have bought from so many different sellers , I pretty much know when I'll take a licking on them and when I'll be cool with it. I set price in my head what I'll pay and stick to it, that way I am not disappointed. I have been very surprised by even the 5-6 dollar a roll deals when they are Buy Only. But I have also been disappointed by a 30 dollar roll from a Top Rated seller because half the roll was obviously searched due to various recent clean swatches in distinct areas known for proof marks. Recently I have been sticking to the same Sellers and if they disappoint me?.. I won't buy from then anymore.
