I was on the telephone this morning with my grandmother telling here about my new found love for coins and she said that she had a "old god coin" and wondered what it was worth. I stepped here through the description and she atated it was a 1909 $5 coin and she was able to make out all the detail on it but she couldnt find a mint mark. She stated that it was my great great grandfathers coins and he put it up int 1909 when he received it. I would say it is an AU grade and like I said she couldnt find the mint mark. Where was the mint mark placed on this coin? Any help would be much appreciated. She told me that if I was a "good boy" That the coin might be mine one of these days. Dallas Williams III
Just giving a WAG, I'd say it might fetch $300-$375 depending on the actual condition and bullion value. Bone
You may have found a RARER coin! In the 2005 Red Book it lists the the value at: $5,000 in AU condition. If your GreatGrand Father received it in 1909 it's probably the Real Deal and not a counterfiet. Mintage: 34,200! SM
Please post some photos and please DON'T clean it and hold it by the rim (or edge)...if it is a real one then yes...if might have some $$$ but it might be a fake...we have to think about both ways... Speedy
BTW--You said that it was in AU grade....have you seen the coin or was that what you Grandmother said??.... Speedy
I have not seen the coin as it is in Illinois and I am ion North Carolina but from what she said I figured that it was AU because she said that it had been in a small plastic case since my great great grandfather gio it in 1909. I will not be able to actually see it until December at Christmas time she is how ever going to take some pictures and email them to me
Err... plastic *did* exist in 1909 but could be pretty expensive. I doubt if it was put in that time... or rather I don't know if they were available commerically. *edited after double checking*
ewww not good! I am going to call her back and see if I can get new details about what it is in or when it was put in there
I only see one problem....is your grandmother a collector?? You see I know people that will tell me about a coin that is a great grade...doesn't look like its been used much and so on...when I see the coin in hand it would be a G or VG...non collectors just don't know such about coins...this may not be the case with your grandmother and it migth be...just something to think about... Speedy
She is not what I would call a aid collector but she does have a small collection that has been passed down through generation in the family
Heres the scoop. The coin was in a old bag for a lot of years and then it was put ino a ring that my grandfather wore. He passed away and she had it taken out and placed in a charm that she has in a "plastic case" and put away in the safe. From what I have gathered it is uncirculated in a sense but more than likely beat to hell because of the history. Every time you think you found that really rare coins there something that happens. It is however the 1909-O so thats one good thing about it.
Well I'm glad that its a 1909-O but the way it was in a ring and then a charm....that will kill the value. A good collector would be able to tell that a coin has been in such places by looking at the rim and such. Since it was in a ring and charm I can almost bet that its not UNC either...the wear from useing the ring and charm would have taken some of the detail down. Speedy
If and when you get the coin, take it to a decent coin delear and just havem grade it,Its possible it isnt damaged from being in jewlery, POSSIBLE!,Hopefully it isnt "Buffed" to badly, Good luck!.
