Was just curious about the upcoming 100 year anniversary 0f the Lincoln cent.

What do you guys think this will do to the value of the Lincoln cents?

I think things will get crazy expensive with all the attention to the cent.
As well as make it harder to find some of the tougher dates, with all the excited new collectors getting involved from the hype.

Prices have already soared in the last 6-8 months on the early date S mint marks. Look at the 1911-S and so on.

I have been putting off starting my Lincoln collection for a while. The shop where I work recently got 2 nice XF 1909-S VDB's in. I had to have one so I worked a trade with the boss. I traded 30 ounces of silver, .15 oz's of platinum and the remainder of the bid price in cash.

So I did it. I finally took the plunge and am on my way to putting together my 1st Lincoln Collection.

What do you guys think is going to happen ???

Ill get some pictures up of my Dansco Album with one Lincoln Cent in it up soon. lol

We've had some pretty good discussions about this in recent months.

I believe they'll continue to rise and yes, they have been moving pretty hard for a while now.

I'm noticing a big upward movement in better grade (like XF or better) Denver minted coins.

I'm not a Lincoln collector per se but that doesn't mean I don't have a few hundred in 2x2s and multiples of semi keys. Always picked them up when I spotted a good price. Glad I did.

Most recent purchase was a 31-D. I have a friend that likes them as do I. Working in a coin shop helps. Had a few nicer examples roll in. Snatched up a higher end VF and higher end XF for $12.

Anything 1909 will be hot of course. This has even spilled over into the Indian series where the 1909 has taken a nice jump.

I think it will level off over time but if you're going to do the set you better get at it hard. I'm seeing Greysheet higher than retail on occasion. That's always a signal to me.

I think it'll send the prices for Lincolns higher, that much is a given. But, in the end, I doubt those prices will remain so inflated. Like we saw with the state quarters, the hype of something new will bring in a lot of speculative buyers and new collectors (more like temporary) who will drive up demand hoping to make a buck. But, these people never make the money and soon dump all their coins, usually below what was paid, and the supply will once more be in pace with demand.

Basically, if you haven't put together a Lincoln set by now, you can either start and pay way more than you have to, or you can wait five or six years and put one together at normal prices. I never buy when the spotlight is on a particular series. Why pay inflated prices if you don't have to?

My predictions as to what will happen prior to, during and after the 2009 Lincoln Cents will be as follows:
    1. All prices of Lincoln Cents will either go up, stay as they are or even go down.
    2. Everyone will try to accumulate as many of the 2009's as possible or they will be ignored or things will continue as they are.
    3. The prices and values of the 1909's will either sky rocket upwards, stay basically the same or something like that.
    4. All coin forums will become full of predictions as to the 2010 Lincoln Cents.
    5. The Mint will now discontinue the Lincoln Cent but will continue the Cent with all the presidents pets for the obverse. The pets favorite toys will be the reverse.
    6. All coinage will be discontinued due to the pressure of the lobbist for credit/debit cards.

Please note that from the above statements I really have no idea and am glad to say so.

I think they will go up even more, but will eventually crash. And that's when I'll be there to finish my set. :D (Still grabbing the tougher to find stuff, as they will be coming out, and even if the prices drop a bit, you still end up with a tough to find Lincoln, where the list price doesn't really reflect that coins "toughness".)

I'm thinking this will bring many new folks to collecting Lincoln cents.
These new collectors will suck up a lot of nice coins and put them away.
I can see prices going up and staying there.
Many of these new collectors are going to mess with their coins and there will be fewer really cool Lincolns out there. It's going to be fun to watch.:)
