I recently re-discovered this IHC I bought on layaway for $25 back in 1974. I was a kid and that was a fortune for me. So one month, maybe five weeks later it was mine. My question to you is, without a TPG I have to rely on my grading skills to determine if I should finally entomb this youthful extravagance? Yes, I know it is a common date. I know it's only a $100-$125 coin if it comes back MS63+. MS64 would be worth it, IMO. MS63 straight up, I don't think so. Your thoughts?
Thank you. And the whole reason for this thread is my doubt as well. So we're on the same page. Thank you. I'm totally on the fence with this one. So I think yes, right now. Just a moment. I think no, right now. Give me another moment..... Please don't view me as indecisive. I'm just not sure.
Original skin, and worth the effort, if that's what you want. Me? No need to feed the beast. Seems lately that the only regardable effort to collecting is getting everything you own into a 3rd party holder. There are merits to keeping things 'raw', and that ain't the 'purse strings' chiming in.......just the scotch.
Your personal preference. I would not since I don't have any of my coins put in slabs. Very nice IHC.
I don’t think you’re being indecisive at all, just cautious. Spending the money to grade can be costly. This coin is on the line and as much as I would like by to grade it, I don’t want to lose money on it either. I’d be content to put in a lock tight cent case and let her be. But that’s me and I wish you the best in making a decent that you can live with.
Well, Russ... Here's my take. That IHC connects you to the kid that was crazy about coins. To me that alone merits the piece it's very own slab. Fifty years from now your great grandkids will show it to their kids and tell them the story of great grandpa putting this on layaway way, way back when he was a kid. Back in the days when they actually drove cars and changed TV stations by hand.... Ask your dealer if you can piggyback this one with one of his submissions.
And I'll post this to emphasize my point above.... Back around the same time, early middle 1970's my family was dirt poor and I was fully addicted to coins. I had a little coin shack conveniently located between me and my school and I was in there every day after school and often spent my lunch money on worn slick V-nickels and the like..... The owner of that coin shack took a liking to me I suspect. I always marveled over this half eagle in his little case so he made me a deal. On my after school visits, I could cut grass, empty garbage, whatever chores he needed for an hourly rate that I cannot remember.... All to be put towards the purchase of this half eagle. I do remember that it took me an entire school year of chores, but when he gave that half eagle to me, I raced home and mom and I sat at the kitchen table all evening marveling over this beautiful gold coin...... Maybe six or eight years ago I had that half eagle set like you see below and sent it back to mom.... Russ, you couldn't take that chain off her neck with a winch ever since. I remember the night she called me to ask if it would hurt the coin to sleep with it on..... Talk about melting my heart.... Yeah, get that IHC slabbed and make some future memories for your family.
Randy, that story truly embodies the word priceless. I can only imagine the feeling you had when that half eagle became yours. As for the mount and presenting it to your mom, well let's just say, my wife needs to stop chopping onions so early in the day. That was a beautiful connection between you. Kudos, my friend.
It is an RB, and is respectable, and wholesale is the same raw or certified, if graded to current standards. RB is more desirable than BN. Either way, protect it and save the wampum. Based only on the photos, I detect a previous cleaning and some verdigris and wear. (5X to screen) As to grade, it is impossible to grade MS from photos.
The sentimental value on this coin is worth much more than any grey sheet bid and I agree with Randy's comments 100%. I say slab that beautiful IHC, Russ!
Wow, this decision is seriously becoming more difficult. The concensus is virtually split. Just like my own thoughts. I was hoping to pass the buck and have you guys make the decision for me. Or at least make the decision easier. LMAO Every reason y'all have given for, or against, is valid. Hence my wishy washy approach.
Can you fire up a poll on this existing thread? Let everyone vote! To slab or not to slab, that is the question. There's a lot of CT'ers who would click a button "yes" or "no".
