Very cool find! That's the first stage of a full cud IMO. The die started to crack and that part was in the process of starting to break off. I have NEVER seen a cud at that stage.....CONGRATS!
excellent coin. i saw that on Ebay, and your previous post here about it. It is unlisted in 'The Cud Book', and you got it for a very fair price. Unfortunately, these are rare coins in low supply, but there is very low demand too. Here's my favorite cud, an 1872 problem free VF30.
