This is a new P I just obtained and was wondering how bad the hit on the shield will hurt the grade and what grade it might get best guess with these photos as I don't have it in hand yet. thanks chris
Gold is not on of my specialties but from what I can see this coin is a common type $5 Gold Liberty and would be worth todays XF to Low AU Pricing and do not think marks on the shield or scratch on the obverse is anything other than normal wear for a Gold coin of this period. Obverse looks like it may have been cleaned but I can not tell from your photos. Very nice photos with different perspectives I would have not seen the scratch if you had not showed the different views. I think a better look would be if this coin was photo out of the 2x2. From what I can see it looks Authentic
I need to get some more $5 gold, nice! The hit on the shield might not be as bad as the scratch under the arrows. I am not good at grading these.. seems decent though, if it has not been cleaned. Hard to tell from those pics.
From a price stand point this coin should not vary more than +/- $10 even if cleaned. Major point would be what the OP intent was, did they want to match a set or was it a Bullion type or was it graded properly when purchased and paid the correct price. Today Now XF = $352 AU = $362
It is difficult for me to say this is cleaned, when the photo is taken in a 2x2. As far as being dipped, too much of this coin's rich luster shows in areas around devices. If had been dipped this luster would have appeared duller but present. I am not sure how dipping could have occurred with the reverse showing the amount of luster it has look inside the Letters too much variation to be dipped.
I have it at AU53 with acceptable surfaces and doubt that mark on the shield is in play; gold gets more consideration for easy damage due to its' softness.
