On the way home from the lab this morning I stopped by this Citgo in a "chitty part of town". When I was in line for my Red Bulls, I noticed this penny in the take a penny need a penny. I about wet myself. When I got it under the scope it may have some MD and possibly a chip on the back right but it really doesnt matter. What caught my attention was the shine and condition. This thing was definitely cleaned at some point? Theres no way it would look this good even if protected right? Theres PMD on it too. Would this be a typical look of a cleaned penny like using an SOS pad or something on it????? Im keeping it because it looks cool almost like jewelry but it would be important to me as a beginner to be able to identify a coin that was cleaned.....I think,
Im guessing something mechanical like a brush or something. It doesnt look pitted or colored like a chemical clean. Cool that someone thought enough of a coin to clean it probably not knowing they destroyed any value. I should toss it back into the wild...might inspire someone else to research it and become a hobbyist. If you knew nothing at all about coins, this one would still surely stick out in your change.
Definitely cleaned was my first and only thought and it was instant. Still, not bad for one cent as I'm sure you left a cent when you took this Cent.
I actually leave a ton of change in those things. I think this is the first time Ive ever taken something out. I'd like to know how they did it so neatly. Im assuming it was done awhile ago since there is some crud on it but who knows. I wonder if/how it will "age" over the next 5 years?
