This is one of my recent purchases off of fleabay. I clicked on this thinking that I would never buy this item. It is a 1904 24k gold plated IHC. Upon further inspection, I noticed some doubling on the rev, then I also noticed that the obv was doubled as well.

Is there a safe way to remove the gold plating?

I've got to admit that it looks like Doubled Die doubling! However, are you sure that it is actual Doubled Die doubling or a result of the Gold plating process?

As far as removing the plating safely without damaging the coin, I have no idea but someone else might!

I just looked at other plated cents like this and the doubling is a trick of the light, there is no real doubling going on.

Going to try getting a refund, this idiot charged me $8 in shipping!

If it is doubling that's very good doubling. One more thing, why would you want to remove the gold plating? B12

B12...a coin that has been plated with gold or silver or anything is worthless...the gold or whatever is so thin that it isn't worth anything and to a coin collector it is a damaged coin...

I know of no way to take off any kind of plating but I know that many coins have been gold plated :(

The shipping charge wasn't listed. I only found out after I went to pay for it. If there was doubling there, the coin would be worth a lot more than what I had paid for it.

Plating can be removed. If done carefully there will be minimal damage, but there will always be some. Of course a plated coin is SEVERELY damaged so even if the coin has some damage after deplating it is still an improvement.
