Ive been going through my dads old coin collection. Ive found a couple of nice ones. This is one of them. It looks to me to be basically perfect except for a few scratches on the front. But I know trained eyes will see things I wont and be able to tell me what to expect as to grade and price. So here it is!

Oh, wow. That was a really nice coin -- before someone decided to scrub it. :( Those "scratches" signify what collectors call "harsh cleaning".

In that state, it's worth some money even after the cleaning, but it's always sad to see "Uncirculated Details"...

It's AU details and heavily cleaned. It isn't worth all that much because of the cleaning.

Thanks guys. I dont know if dad cleaned it or he got it that way. Knowing how he was I doubt he cleaned it and probably got it that way.

Any ideas on dollar value in its lessened state?

Just have a look at some eBay auctions for 03-O halves in AU-details and you'll have a ballpark figure.

Looked on ebay as suggested. Thanks.

There's 3 that I saw listed as AU between $429 and 975. The two higher priced ones were pgcs certified. The cheaper one was listed as AU+. A number of the certified xf and vf coins overlapped the lower end of that price range. Most of the vfs seemed to be $120 to $300. None of these xf of vfs seem to compare to my coin. But, then again, none claimed to be heavily cleaned.

If I were to list it on ebay (I have listed some other coins on there but they werent overly special) what would a reasonable starting price be (if that's an ok question to ask)?

You can always start a 7-day auction at $1, just make sure to start on a weekend. I would be honest and mention that the coin has been cleaned. So the winner can't say the coin is not as good as expected and they'll have no reason to return it. If you would have it graded, you could also provide the grade (e.g AU details) and guarantee its authenticity. But that's up to you...

You're looking at asking prices, not the prices at which items actually sold. Click on the "Sold listings" box on the left-hand side of the page, and you'll see only prices at which items actually sold.

Ahhh! Thanks. I didnt know you could do that...

The most comparable one went for 202.50 on 11/11/13. Mine seems to have slightly better details and is a little less scratched.

Im about to post an 1894 O dime im likewise interested in hearing you guys opinions about.
