I have a 1900-S quarter with an inverted mint mark. It was graded by SEGS as a 1900-S quarter cleaned F-15 with inverted "S" mint mark, also says mintage:unknown. Does anyone know if this is an uncommon error? And have any idea of the value?? I have not been able to find this error in any books to date. THANKS
to Cointalk Fomoco. I see two major problems with your coin: It isn't very likely that a true mint error, especially one as striking as an upside down (or backwards) mint mark, would escape all notice for more than a century. SEGS is very close to the bottom of the list when ranking TPG reliability. Perhaps if you post pictures - one of the whole obverse as well as a closeup of the mint mark area - some of our error experts can tell you whether or not you have the discovery piece for a newly recorded error. BTW there were 1,858,585 quarters minted at San Francisco in 1900.
Actually Roy inverted mint marks are not all that uncommon - they just aren't recognized by most people nor are they widely discussed. But there have been several articles about them in recent months in the numismatic press. And I agree that SEGS is not at the top of the grading company pile but they usually are spot on when it comes to varieties and such. Fomoco - to the best of my knowledge this particular variety/error does not add value.
Hi, I have attemped to take pictures of the coin. See what you think. If you lay it next to another 1900-S, The S is clearly upside down.
That's what happens when someone who doesn't collect - or know much about - US coins tries to answer a question about them.
Here is an example of an inverted mintmark that just sold on Ebay...might give you an idea what yours is worth.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...90016552056&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEDW:IT&rd=1 Larry Nienaber
Not hardly---its not even the same coin...you would need to find a coin of the same type/date/mintmark/and grade before it could even start to become a good guess at what one is worth. Speedy
Hi, I am still looking for a value for this coin. I have checked many places, including major coin dealers, and no one seems to have heard of this variety before. Most answers are what ever the markert will stand. But I would think that someone would know.
More than likely there isn't a record of a price of this coin---so no one would know of a value---the only way to find out is to put it up for auction. Speedy
Hey Fomoco, First let me say welcome to Coin Talk. Second, nice coin!!!:thumb: I would say Speedy has the right answer. Put it up on Ebay with a ridiculous reserve and see what happens. It might seem sneaky, but it's a great market test for your coin. Michael
Okay - I'm not saying that it is not an inverted S, I don't know anything about them, but you have to admit - an upside down S sounds pretty funny! Like a backwards I or an upside down O.
