Good afternoon! bought a coin from ebay from a trusted seller, gurt non-standard .. railroad rim error + misaligned die mint error weight of coin 26,60 evaluate the authenticity and value of the coin p.s. transfer is google, thank you p.s.s video coin - link removed by mod -
Maybe @messy desk can explain what happened with the third side. I see a polished and possibly an altered coin. OP what does the coin weigh? Whats the diameter of the coin? To the closest mm.
According to Alan Herbert in his book, "Official Price Guide to Mint Errors, the edge anomaly is called a "Tilted Partial Collar Strike". Chris
I am unable to find anything on this error on http://www.error-ref.com/ Does this mean that half the collar already broke away? Before being struck?
That "yadi.sk" in the link is short for Yandex Disk. If you don't want to click, fine of course, but it is simply a short video that shows the edge of the coin. Christian
Thanks for the heads up on the weight. A 1900 Morgan should weigh 26.73g. Yours, I would expect is within tolerance, especially with the surfaces being worn and polished. If it was a lot lighter? I would have stuck with the altered statement. What does the coin measure in inches. 1-7/16"? 1-1/2"?
After a coin is struck, the anvil die rises to push the coin out of the collar (actually I'm not sure if the die rises or if the caller is pushed down. Frankly pushing down the collar makes more sense to me.) When the end will die retracts sometimes the collar sticks not allowing the anvil die to retract fully. This results in a coining chamber that is shallower than it should be. When the planchet enters the coining chamber it now extends above the surface of the collar. When it is struck you get the reeding on the lower portion of the coin and the upper portion of the coin is left blank and sometimes spreads out above the surface of the collar. This is a partial collar strike, sometimes called a railroad edge. If the collar sticks more on one side when they anvil die retracts, the surface of the collar may be tipped relative to its normal position in the coining chamber is more shallow on one side than on the other. A coin struck in such a coining chamber may have nearly full reeding on one side and only partial reeding on the other. This is a tilted partial collar strike. The OP coin matches this.
View attachment 760621 I can not accurately measure it, MUCH MORE than another 1889о Morgan coin with a standard gurt
No problem; it was not incorrect. It's just that some of our members are quite cautious when it comes to sites/domains they are not familiar with. Better safe than sorry, y'know. Not that I am an expert here, but a minor (!) weight difference could be explained by the fact that the edge ("gurt" is Russian) is not or just partly milled ... Christian
